Building balanced leaders for the world’s communities is the mission statement of Sigma Phi Epsilon. IIT will provide students with the knowledge to succeed in your field and Illinois Beta’s balanced man program will provide the knowledge outside the classroom to succeed after college with an experience of a lifetime.
SigEp uses a program catered to last an entire undergraduate career in order to build balanced men focusing on these four categories – leadership, scholarship, athletics, and gentlemanly behavior. To accomplish this, our fraternity follows three cardinal principles, virtue, diligence, and brotherly love along with three secondary principles, sound mind, sound body, and balance.
The program is divided into four stages – Sigma, Phi, Epsilon, and Brother Mentor. Sigma (first two months) is an introduction to college and fraternity life, Phi (next 4 to 5 months) aims to teach the meaning of being a fraternity man, Epsilon (1 to 2 years) focuses is leadership, and Brother Mentor (last year or two) is getting ready for post-undergraduate life.
Along the way, each member has challenge coordinators to guide each group of Sigmas, Phis, Epsilons, and Brother Mentors. These coordinators drive the challenge towards a common goal set forth by the VP of Development. What does all this mean after four years? I started the program in August 2004, finished with a degree in computer science with a minor in business management and landed a career at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
